Task 2b - Journal Writing Experience

Journal writing has been great so far - It is something I have never done before really and since starting I found it very beneficial.  As I mentioned in my first post about journal writing - before beginning this task I would normally lie in bed trying to sleep but not being able to as I have thoughts running through my head.. So It is great to be able to write them all down - and have them to look back on.

Description

I initially started off describing the main events of each day and I was thinking to myself that although it gets thoughts off my mind it wasn't really benefiting me in any way and thought I was writing down pointless information that would never really help me with anything.  I then looked at task 2b and thought this is where it will become interesting, so each night I chose to write my journal a different way as set out in the Handbook.

Initial Reflection

This way of writing was very beneficial for me.  At first I thought it was going to be quite similar to 'description', but I was wrong.  I was not just recounting the days events but I was analysing what effect those events had had on me.  Like Michelle said in her post - I find it easier to answer direct questions, so that is how I approached this way of writing - I made a note of the example questions in the handbook and used them to guide me into deeper thought.

List

Unlike Michelle I don't tend to make lists, which makes me wonder - its probably why I can be so disorganised ! I never thought that this way of writing would benefit me as much as the last as to me it would be just words on the paper with no description or meaning.  So I approached this way of writing feeling quite negative towards it.  I was unsure really of what to write as I was having to choose a word that summarised a feeling.  In the handbook it said about extended lists - which would just mean more words on a page.  I had a look on listography where I read :
We also see listographies as a valuable interaction between past you and present you, a record of what you want to remember.
This then made me realise that the list was not really there for 'initial reflection' but an ongoing, easy to understand reflection.  So I completely changed my mind on this way of writing, as the handbook said we will need to keep an ongoing reflective journal, so a list is an easily accessible option that can be quickly looked back on.  However there is no deeper thought there and I think it would be hard to read between the lines when looking back.

Evaluation

I always evaluate my classes after teaching but normally just in my mind or when telling somebody, so I enjoyed writing down what worked / what didn't etc..  I evaluate normally because I believe it helps me progress as a teacher and learn from experience.  Writing it down definitely helped me as this would normally be something swimming through my mind or when my partner asks how did teaching go? I will tell him, but he probably doesn't really understand.  I felt when evaluating it on paper I could look deeper into it and it would always be there for me to look back on and show how far I have come and also look back on what not to do again or something that I could do again.

Graphs, Charts and Diagrams

These were both ways of writing I was not looking forward to trying.  I don't think this is something you could do on a daily basis as it is more about comparing which is to be done on a wider scale.  Like it says in the handbook - compare your day to last week or last year, I would find it difficult to do daily.  I looked at Sarah's graph where she evaluated hourly stress levels, it was quite interesting to look at and shows the evaluation of a day but it was just of one topic.  I decided to draw a graph evaluating the past week thinking about the three different terms mentioned in the handbook - fun, freedom and stress.  I marked each with a different colour and I noticed that when I my stress levels were up my fun and freedom levels were down.  I thought about using a graph or bar chart at the end of each week to evaluate the whole week but most would be the same as the different factors that alter my levels of stress etc will be staying the same.  So I will probably opt for just using this way of writing once a year to evaluate on a whole and see where situations / circumstances may have changed which has made those different levels change.  A flow chart would help summarise the graph as it would evaluate what made my different levels change.  Having not been able to attend campus sessions due to lots of commitments I was glad to read Michelle's post about 'the bubble at the front of your head' I found it useful as I was unsure of how I was going to use a diagram as a way of writing my Journal.  This was similar to a list for me but was actually more beneficial as it was clear what was of more significance than other thoughts from the day.  I preferred this method than the graphs and it is something you could use daily.

What If?

This way of writing didn't really make me want to write....I felt it was a very negative approach to evaluating my day.  What could have happened? is thinking of something that did not happen and therefore I feel I am not really reflecting on what actually happened.  There are things I want to happen sometimes but that's looking to the future and something I would not think about everyday.  I didn't get much from this way of writing, in fact I hardly wrote anything as it didn't make me want to write more.   I will write about what I would and wouldn't like to happen sometimes but not as a sole way of writing.  I think It will be something interesting to look back on as you can see if what you wanted became true ..

Another View

This was a way of writing I was looking forward to.  I think it would be quite hard to do this all the time but I think if something has happened that day like a disagreement for example, then I think it would be very beneficial to look at both sides.  At the point of a disagreement you always have your own opinion and stick with it but looking back on something from another view could be quite good for you and help you to understand why the person was acting that way.  I think that this way of writing will definitely benefit me as a teacher, this may be when a child misbehaves - why did they do that? did I do anything to make them act this way? could this have been avoided? (wow! I think that has just made me question what if?!)

My journal writing experience has been interesting and I have learnt a lot already after trying the different ways of writing.  Since trying all the ways I have come to the conclusion that I can not just stick to one type of writing.  Some days I feel more reflective than others and I may want to evaluate more and go into more depth.  Others I may want to make a list about what has happened but maybe go into more depth about a certain topic.  When something has happened as I said in 'another view' I may want to look at the situation at other angles that I would not normally look at which may help me in understanding and evaluating what has happened.  I will save graphs and charts for a yearly thing or maybe when its 'show week' at a dance school so I can see how the experience changes me feelings and thoughts.

Task 2a - Reflective Practice

When I first looked at this task I thought it was going to be difficult alike what I first felt about blogging, but in fact I couldn't have been more wrong.  I am really enjoying writing a journal as it gives me time to 'wind down'.  Teaching involves late nights and ideas and thoughts swimming through my mind, and I tend to find it hard to sleep.   The adrenaline still pumping and my mind racing doesn't go well with trying to sleep and I have wondered how I would get over it.  Writing my journal is helping in more ways than one.  All the thoughts that were once driving me up the wall with not being able to sleep are now spilling out onto paper and making a lot more sense.  Journal writing is definitely something I will keep up and I really think it is helping me be better at what I do.   I can tell I have not done a lot of writing for a while, as my arm aches each night from writing so much.  I am finding it quite easy to reflect when I have been teaching or choreographing, but when I have just done a normal days work it is sometimes hard and so I will experiment with different techniques to help me reflect.   I remember a teacher once said to me that her best ideas came to her when trying to sleep and she kept a note book by her bed to scribble down her thoughts so she wouldn't forget them!

Task 1d - Images

When I first set up my blog, I added a slideshow in the top right hand corner.  The slideshow is linked to my flickr account and shows my images randomly which adds a nice touch to my page.  It has come in very handy for this task - here is the link to my flickr page.

Task 1b - Further Thoughts

Many people will admit to being 'addicted' to Facebook, and to me this is quite possibly a bad thing - I find myself a lot of the time not getting things done as I get side tracked with trying to keep up to date with the world of Facebook.  As a teacher I tend not to have pupils as my 'friends' as I want to keep the image they have of me professional.  A worrying thought was when a young child I teach aged 7/8 requested me as a friend on Facebook.  At that age I know children learn how to use computers but having a Facebook account  at an early age is wrong.  How scary is it to think the children can be speaking to strangers? People making 'fake' profiles, bullying, arranging house parties when parents are away -  the list is endless.  Facebook should have an age limit, and if it does it obviously doesn't work as people can just type any date of birth in to create an account.

I can only ever praise YouTube, but when Alan mentioned  about looking at both sides - it made me think.. Yes there are things we don't think about - like how children could come across inappropriate videos containing violence or explicit content.  There is the chance of copyright, which everyone risks when they upload a video to YouTube.

Google docs are a great way to have your documents online but if you do not want your work to be seen by others then it should be set to private as anyone can read the content otherwise.  I discovered another great use for Google Docs today! A friend of mine brought round her USB stick to show me a PowerPoint Presentation she had made, however, I don't have the program she used and it would not open on my computer.  I had the idea of trying to open it in Google Docs and it worked perfectly! My friend was very impressed as she had never heard of Google Docs before and said she will probably use this tool in the future!

BitTorrent (file sharing) for music, videos etc.. can be very beneficial, however it can also cause harm to your computer by spreading viruses.  BitTorrent is used at your own risk as any file downloaded could contain a virus.  BitTorrent or other file sharing sites are causing sales to drop in shops or online which sell dvds and cds...

Starting on the BAPP course and needing a lot of websites and pages at an easy click made my Google Chrome Bookmarks multiply and Delicious seems to be the perfect solution.  There I will be able to store all things I need for Bapp.  By default the bookmarks are public and so it must be changed if people do not want their bookmarks available for anyone to see.  Personally I will use delicious for my own use as my bookmarks are overloaded on Chrome.  I think it is a good idea to put all bookmarks related to one subject (BAPP!) in one easy click on delicious rather than mixed with other bookmarks which have no relation.

Blogs like other Web 2.0 tools can be changed from public to private, and I found it strange when I clicked 'next blog' the other day and found it was someone's totally random post who had nothing to do with BAPP?  I was expecting somebody's Blog I follow and was shocked when it wasn't.  I know Blogs are for anyone to see unless made private but found it strange to think that anyone can stumble across my Blog.  It probably sounds silly having thought only BAPP people could view it!

Something that worries me about flickr is that if like i said I upload photos onto the site to free space on my computer - how do I know if the site will ever shut down and the photos will be gone? Is this a possible Scenario? I have created an account and made it public - purely for the fact that I can link it to my blog and let BAPP students view them - although having photos public means anyone can see them and in normal circumstances (like when adding photos to Facebook) I would only allow friends to view them.

Web 2.0 tools are something that most people use.  There are many pros and cons for each tool but I think the pros out-way the cons, that is why the tools are still in use and so popular.  I can't imagine what the world would be without web 2.0 tools - I am just so used to using them at the click of a finger - how easy is that! But really is this making us lazy like others have said...I think so and with technology continuing to grow it's quite scary to think what's next?

Task 1b - Professional Communication Technologies

After reading 'Reader 1' numerous times I am impressed with what I have learnt so far and the learning continues each time I read.

I am surprised, like Michelle said of how much I already know about Web 2.0 without realising it.  It sounded scary at first the term Web 2.0 - as I didn't think myself to be much of a 'whiz' with technology.  I will now look at what Web 2.0 tools I already use and those which I intend to use after discovering them.

Like most people I know - I am addicted to Facebook.  It's crazy to think that one website can have so many people hooked?  After speaking with Paula and having discussed Facebook and whether or not I have two accounts: one for social and one for professional use?  My answer was just one....and having read Jessica Hays post I realised how wrong this is - oops...but to be honest when I used to use it for professional use it was only to look for jobs, I was not linked with any potential Employers.  I have a 'group' for a class I run which I believe is better than using my personal account as it is solely for the class and so I guess that it is like having a separate account for professional use?  Facebook has many pros and cons like most things.  Pros being a place to connect with friends and meet friends - (only through 'mutual friends') - which is how I met my fiancĂ©! Cons being somewhere to plan violence as stated in Alicia's blog.

YouTube - what a great creation, I use this tool a lot.  I use it for my own personal use - to get ideas for choreography and songs I can use, I also use it to post videos of dances I am currently teaching to help my students over half terms as a quick and easy source for practising (hopefully!).  I used to use YouTube to send potential employers clips of me dancing - which I actually got offered a job from, so it just shows how successful the website can be!  In the Web 2.0 Guide it says about having tutorials on YouTube of how to do certain things such as creating a GMail account.  I haven't needed to use any yet but what a great thing to know that this is available?!

I have got to say Google is amazing - I always use Google Chrome, which I love, but why did I never know about Google docs?  I hadn't even looked at Google docs but having read about it in the Web 2.0 Guide and reading about it in Jessica Hays blog I was very impressed, and knew it would benefit me a lot.  My computer is so full and has hardly any space and I was thinking of purchasing a memory stick but it seems I don't have to if I use Google docs, I can't wait to explore more!

BitTorrent? I would never have listed that as a Web 2.0 tool but in looking at it - it really couldn't be anything but a Web 2.0.  This really has opened my eyes and I can't believe how much I already know but did not know I knew?

After reading Alicia Becks post on Web 2.0 it was clear that a delicious page would benefit me.  I have never heard of delicious before starting on the BAPP course.  I have Google Chrome which allows favourite bookmarks at an easy click and other bookmarks stored in a folder.

Wikipedia is not something I need to use regularly, although I have used it before.  I wouldn't have thought that Wikipedia was a Web 2.0 tool, meaning it is not purely factual and therefore not the reliable source I have thought it was in the past.  I would still use Wikipedia if I needed to, as I am unaware of anything else like it, but I will be wary of what I read on there after finding out it is a Web 2.0 tool.

Blogging - something that is very new to me and something which I was wary of at first.  I was surprised to learn blogging would be a major part of the communication and posting of work for the course.  Now my views have changed, I like the idea of sharing my work, ideas, views and believe it is helping improve my professional development and also my critical analysis on my own work and others (something which would not normally come naturally to me).

Flickr is new to me too - I probably have heard the name before but not taken much interest. I have signed up and actually used the link as a gadget on my profile.  I am not sure that I would normally use it but it was a great way to add photos to my blog.  I will look into it more as I know sometimes people add their photos to websites to store them rather than on the space of the computer, this would benefit me as I think that a lot of the space used on my computer are photos - and the memory is nearly full!

Web 2.0 - something I knew of and used, but something I did not fully understand or know about until now!

Task 1a - Professional Profile

Here is a link to my CV using Google docs for the first time!

Here Goes...

Well..after a rocky start I thought it's time to get stuck in!
After reading Ebony's post I was in agreement - I feel exactly the same!
This is my 1st day off since staring the course so I have waited until today to really get my head around it all..
Having just looked at 'google reader' (which is such a great tool) I am wishing I had started earlier as everyone seems to be way ahead...

I can't believe I never knew anything about blogging and all the things that go with it.  I am looking forward to developing my knowledge on Web 2.0.

I will work on the look of my blog - and have it as a work in progress - like Ebony said she has changed her look a few times and I think this may be the case for me until I am satisfied with it.  I impressed myself the other day when I added photos to my blog, not quite sure how I managed that one.  I saw on other people's profiles they had added photos and wanted that personal touch myself and I did it - I will be adding more in time.

Well best start on the tasks ahead.
