Task 1d - Images

When I first set up my blog, I added a slideshow in the top right hand corner.  The slideshow is linked to my flickr account and shows my images randomly which adds a nice touch to my page.  It has come in very handy for this task - here is the link to my flickr page.

Task 1b - Further Thoughts

Many people will admit to being 'addicted' to Facebook, and to me this is quite possibly a bad thing - I find myself a lot of the time not getting things done as I get side tracked with trying to keep up to date with the world of Facebook.  As a teacher I tend not to have pupils as my 'friends' as I want to keep the image they have of me professional.  A worrying thought was when a young child I teach aged 7/8 requested me as a friend on Facebook.  At that age I know children learn how to use computers but having a Facebook account  at an early age is wrong.  How scary is it to think the children can be speaking to strangers? People making 'fake' profiles, bullying, arranging house parties when parents are away -  the list is endless.  Facebook should have an age limit, and if it does it obviously doesn't work as people can just type any date of birth in to create an account.

I can only ever praise YouTube, but when Alan mentioned  about looking at both sides - it made me think.. Yes there are things we don't think about - like how children could come across inappropriate videos containing violence or explicit content.  There is the chance of copyright, which everyone risks when they upload a video to YouTube.

Google docs are a great way to have your documents online but if you do not want your work to be seen by others then it should be set to private as anyone can read the content otherwise.  I discovered another great use for Google Docs today! A friend of mine brought round her USB stick to show me a PowerPoint Presentation she had made, however, I don't have the program she used and it would not open on my computer.  I had the idea of trying to open it in Google Docs and it worked perfectly! My friend was very impressed as she had never heard of Google Docs before and said she will probably use this tool in the future!

BitTorrent (file sharing) for music, videos etc.. can be very beneficial, however it can also cause harm to your computer by spreading viruses.  BitTorrent is used at your own risk as any file downloaded could contain a virus.  BitTorrent or other file sharing sites are causing sales to drop in shops or online which sell dvds and cds...

Starting on the BAPP course and needing a lot of websites and pages at an easy click made my Google Chrome Bookmarks multiply and Delicious seems to be the perfect solution.  There I will be able to store all things I need for Bapp.  By default the bookmarks are public and so it must be changed if people do not want their bookmarks available for anyone to see.  Personally I will use delicious for my own use as my bookmarks are overloaded on Chrome.  I think it is a good idea to put all bookmarks related to one subject (BAPP!) in one easy click on delicious rather than mixed with other bookmarks which have no relation.

Blogs like other Web 2.0 tools can be changed from public to private, and I found it strange when I clicked 'next blog' the other day and found it was someone's totally random post who had nothing to do with BAPP?  I was expecting somebody's Blog I follow and was shocked when it wasn't.  I know Blogs are for anyone to see unless made private but found it strange to think that anyone can stumble across my Blog.  It probably sounds silly having thought only BAPP people could view it!

Something that worries me about flickr is that if like i said I upload photos onto the site to free space on my computer - how do I know if the site will ever shut down and the photos will be gone? Is this a possible Scenario? I have created an account and made it public - purely for the fact that I can link it to my blog and let BAPP students view them - although having photos public means anyone can see them and in normal circumstances (like when adding photos to Facebook) I would only allow friends to view them.

Web 2.0 tools are something that most people use.  There are many pros and cons for each tool but I think the pros out-way the cons, that is why the tools are still in use and so popular.  I can't imagine what the world would be without web 2.0 tools - I am just so used to using them at the click of a finger - how easy is that! But really is this making us lazy like others have said...I think so and with technology continuing to grow it's quite scary to think what's next?

Task 1b - Professional Communication Technologies

After reading 'Reader 1' numerous times I am impressed with what I have learnt so far and the learning continues each time I read.

I am surprised, like Michelle said of how much I already know about Web 2.0 without realising it.  It sounded scary at first the term Web 2.0 - as I didn't think myself to be much of a 'whiz' with technology.  I will now look at what Web 2.0 tools I already use and those which I intend to use after discovering them.

Like most people I know - I am addicted to Facebook.  It's crazy to think that one website can have so many people hooked?  After speaking with Paula and having discussed Facebook and whether or not I have two accounts: one for social and one for professional use?  My answer was just one....and having read Jessica Hays post I realised how wrong this is - oops...but to be honest when I used to use it for professional use it was only to look for jobs, I was not linked with any potential Employers.  I have a 'group' for a class I run which I believe is better than using my personal account as it is solely for the class and so I guess that it is like having a separate account for professional use?  Facebook has many pros and cons like most things.  Pros being a place to connect with friends and meet friends - (only through 'mutual friends') - which is how I met my fiancĂ©! Cons being somewhere to plan violence as stated in Alicia's blog.

YouTube - what a great creation, I use this tool a lot.  I use it for my own personal use - to get ideas for choreography and songs I can use, I also use it to post videos of dances I am currently teaching to help my students over half terms as a quick and easy source for practising (hopefully!).  I used to use YouTube to send potential employers clips of me dancing - which I actually got offered a job from, so it just shows how successful the website can be!  In the Web 2.0 Guide it says about having tutorials on YouTube of how to do certain things such as creating a GMail account.  I haven't needed to use any yet but what a great thing to know that this is available?!

I have got to say Google is amazing - I always use Google Chrome, which I love, but why did I never know about Google docs?  I hadn't even looked at Google docs but having read about it in the Web 2.0 Guide and reading about it in Jessica Hays blog I was very impressed, and knew it would benefit me a lot.  My computer is so full and has hardly any space and I was thinking of purchasing a memory stick but it seems I don't have to if I use Google docs, I can't wait to explore more!

BitTorrent? I would never have listed that as a Web 2.0 tool but in looking at it - it really couldn't be anything but a Web 2.0.  This really has opened my eyes and I can't believe how much I already know but did not know I knew?

After reading Alicia Becks post on Web 2.0 it was clear that a delicious page would benefit me.  I have never heard of delicious before starting on the BAPP course.  I have Google Chrome which allows favourite bookmarks at an easy click and other bookmarks stored in a folder.

Wikipedia is not something I need to use regularly, although I have used it before.  I wouldn't have thought that Wikipedia was a Web 2.0 tool, meaning it is not purely factual and therefore not the reliable source I have thought it was in the past.  I would still use Wikipedia if I needed to, as I am unaware of anything else like it, but I will be wary of what I read on there after finding out it is a Web 2.0 tool.

Blogging - something that is very new to me and something which I was wary of at first.  I was surprised to learn blogging would be a major part of the communication and posting of work for the course.  Now my views have changed, I like the idea of sharing my work, ideas, views and believe it is helping improve my professional development and also my critical analysis on my own work and others (something which would not normally come naturally to me).

Flickr is new to me too - I probably have heard the name before but not taken much interest. I have signed up and actually used the link as a gadget on my profile.  I am not sure that I would normally use it but it was a great way to add photos to my blog.  I will look into it more as I know sometimes people add their photos to websites to store them rather than on the space of the computer, this would benefit me as I think that a lot of the space used on my computer are photos - and the memory is nearly full!

Web 2.0 - something I knew of and used, but something I did not fully understand or know about until now!

Task 1a - Professional Profile

Here is a link to my CV using Google docs for the first time!

Here Goes...

Well..after a rocky start I thought it's time to get stuck in!
After reading Ebony's post I was in agreement - I feel exactly the same!
This is my 1st day off since staring the course so I have waited until today to really get my head around it all..
Having just looked at 'google reader' (which is such a great tool) I am wishing I had started earlier as everyone seems to be way ahead...

I can't believe I never knew anything about blogging and all the things that go with it.  I am looking forward to developing my knowledge on Web 2.0.

I will work on the look of my blog - and have it as a work in progress - like Ebony said she has changed her look a few times and I think this may be the case for me until I am satisfied with it.  I impressed myself the other day when I added photos to my blog, not quite sure how I managed that one.  I saw on other people's profiles they had added photos and wanted that personal touch myself and I did it - I will be adding more in time.

Well best start on the tasks ahead.
